Amnesty December 2020 Announced for Prisoners in Thailand

After months of speculation, the royal amnesty was announced today 04 December 2020. Over the last few months, Thailand Bail had been hearing about the possibility of a clemency to be announced in December 2020, and it is now no longer just a rumour. Our lawyers have obtained a copy of the announcement, and we are reviewing it currently. The royal pardon, as some people refer to it as, is the 2nd one to be announced this year (2020), with the previous amnesty announced in commemoration of the birthday of His Majesty the King. This second clemency is to mark the occasion of the late His Majesty the King Rama 9, whose birthday is 05 December.

According to initial sources, this second act of clemency from His Majesty will provide full pardons as well as sentence reductions to various prisoners in Thai prisons.

A Reason to Celebrate in 2020

As we approach the holiday season 2020, it has been a challenging year due to COVID. The court was closed for a period of time, with all of our cases being postponed, and then everything started to get back to normal for our cases, and 2020 turned into our busiest year yet. This recent announcement for the royal pardon and sentence reduction is welcome news for those who have friends or family in Thai prisons.

The total number of affected prisoners in Thai prisons has been announced as 30,000 prisoners who will receive full pardons and will be released, as well as another 200,000 prisoners who will receive reductions in their prison sentences, given by the Thai court.
