Bangkok Criminal Court

As part of Thailand Bail’s profile of the prisons and courts of Thailand, we continue our information on our website with a profile of the Bangkok Criminal Court, located in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Bangkok Criminal Court is the main court complex in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand. The actual court has many names including the Bangkok Criminal Court, the Ratchada Court, the Criminal Court, and transliterated from Thai as San-a-ya. It is the court that is on the north end of the entire court complex on Ratchada Road in northern Bangkok. The other courts in this complex include the Civil Court (San-Paeng), and the Northern Municipal Court of Bangkok (San-Khwaeng-Ratchada). Together, these courts create a very impressive compound of courts, banks, a post office, and other buildings within the compound.

The Criminal Court itself has a steady flow of famous cases go through it, and Thailand Bail and its lawyers and case managers have been a part of many of them. Some of the more notable cases in recent times include the case of Russian businessman Viktor Bout, who spent more than 2 years going to the Criminal Court for his well-known extradition case that the United States initiated. He was successful in the Court of First Instance (the Criminal Court), and the extradition was blocked. However, during the appeal, which was also read at the Criminal Court after being considered by the Court of Appeals (San-Utorn), Viktor Bout was found to be extraditable, and he was henceforth sent to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in

New York City, New York, USA. Many political cases have also been heard here, including much of the Yingluck Shinawatra case. However, now that she has left Thailand, and an arrest warrant has been issued for her from the court, it is doubtful if she will be appearing at the Bangkok Criminal Court anytime soon.
