In early January 2020, Thailand’s Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), in coordination with the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) and Customs Department, announced the arrest of a young defendant, who was implicated as the second defendant in a case involving the alleged cross-border trafficking of ecstasy (MDMA) and cannabis.

The authorities claimed the drugs—1,010 ecstasy pills and 285 grams of cannabis—had been shipped via international postal parcels and delivered to a condominium in Bang Sao Thong, Samut Prakan. The case was prosecuted aggressively, in line with the government’s Airport Interdiction Taskforce (AITF) initiative, aimed at combating international drug smuggling.

Following the trial in the Court of First Instance, which we did NOT manage, the result was devastating: The defendant was sentenced to life imprisonment.
