Southern Bangkok Criminal Court

Thailand Bail was recently working on cases at the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court, and we wanted to share a bit of information about the court for those of you who are planning to visit the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court on your own or with a lawyer. The court itself was established in 1989 to deal with the increasing number of cases that were going through the court system in Bangkok and the time in which it took to complete the cases. In order to alleviate the Civil Court and Criminal Court’s case load, the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court and the Southern Bangkok Civil Court were opened together. When the court was first set up, it was used for the districts of Pathumwan, Pom Prap Sattru Phai, Bang Rak, Phra Khanong, Samphanthawong, and Yannawa. Since then, the jurisdiction of the court has changed somewhat to include more districts.

Depending on the day, the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court can be completely full or almost empty, as was the case on Friday when we were representing a client there. Thailand Bail’s attorney as well as our court interpreter were there on this day, and the legal proceedings went well for us and our client, thanks to the legal assistance our lawyers provided. Usually, the court is very busy with defendants, plaintiffs, and lawyers going about their business, and waiting times can vary from 1 hour to 8 hours (all day) depending on the day. This is part of the reality of working in a court in Thailand, and can sometimes prolong trials for quite a while.
